You may need to send money to Georgia before you move or long after you've settled in. Perhaps your income is paid into an account abroad, while your rent and everyday expenses are in Georgia. Crypto can be a way to transfer your savings or send smaller amounts each month.

If your usual money transfer service is no longer available, another option is to buy crypto abroad and exchange it for cash or a bank transfer in Georgia.

How the Transfer Works

It's legal to own and exchange cryptocurrency in Georgia, but you can't use it to pay directly for everyday goods and services. To cover local expenses, you'll need to convert your USDT into traditional currency, also known as fiat money.

You buy crypto using money in a bank account abroad, then send it to a crypto exchange service in Georgia. The service converts it into US dollars, euros or Georgian lari. Depending on the provider, you can collect cash or have the money sent to your bank account.

USDT (Tether) is often used for these transfers. It's a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar at a 1:1 ratio, which makes it easier to work out how much you're sending than with a cryptocurrency like Bitcoin, whose price fluctuates.

How to Send Money Step by Step

Step 1: Buy USDT in Your Home Country

Choose a crypto exchange that accepts customers from your country and supports the currency you want to pay in. You'll usually need to verify your identity with a passport or another form of ID when you sign up.

P2P, or peer-to-peer trading, is one way to buy USDT. On the exchange's P2P marketplace, other users list crypto for sale. Choose your payment currency and a payment method, open a trade and pay the seller using the details shown in the order. The platform holds the seller's crypto while the trade is in progress, then releases it to you once payment is confirmed. Before choosing a seller, check their reviews, completed trades and payment terms. If they ask you to cancel the order and finish the trade in a messaging app, don't go ahead.

Before buying, check whether you can withdraw USDT to an external wallet and what the fee will be. An exchange may temporarily suspend withdrawals after a password change or during network maintenance, for example.

Step 2: Arrange the Exchange

Contact the GeCrypto team through its official Telegram channel. Tell them how much USDT you want to sell and whether you'd prefer cash or a bank transfer. Confirm the rate and the final amount you'll receive. Ask how long the quote is valid and which network you should use to send the USDT. If you're collecting cash, arrange a time to visit the office.

Step 3: Verify Your Identity

Register on the website and complete the identity check, also known as KYC (Know Your Customer). You'll need a passport or ID card, and the check usually takes a few minutes.

Step 4: Send Your USDT

Ask the GeCrypto team for the wallet address for your transaction. In your exchange account, go to Withdraw, select USDT and paste in the address. Choose the network agreed with GeCrypto. For example, if the receiving wallet accepts USDT on TRON (TRC20), you must send it using that network. Before confirming, check the address and the amount GeCrypto will receive after the withdrawal fee. Save the transaction ID (TXID) once you've sent the funds so you can track the transfer if there's a delay.

Step 5: Receive Your Money in Georgia

If you don't yet have a Georgian bank account, you can collect cash from the crypto exchange office. You can then exchange any dollars you receive for lari to cover local expenses. For regular transfers, it's often easier to have the money sent to your Georgian bank account and spend it using your card.

At GeCrypto, most exchanges take a few minutes once the crypto has arrived. Allow extra time for identity verification if you're using the service for the first time. For a bank transfer, your bank's processing time also matters. Further checks may delay a transaction, so ask the team how long to allow.

What the Transfer Costs

The total cost includes buying USDT, sending it and exchanging it in Georgia. Some costs are built into the exchange rate, so compare the amount you'll actually receive in cash or in your account.

StageCosts to check
Buying USDTThe seller's rate, platform fees and any payment fees
Sending USDTThe exchange's withdrawal fee for your chosen network
Exchanging USDT in GeorgiaThe USDT conversion rate and any separate exchange fee
Receiving your moneyAny bank fees or currency conversion costs

At GeCrypto, the rate and fees depend on the currencies, amount and type of transaction. Before sending your crypto, ask for a quote showing what you'll receive after all GeCrypto charges. Check bank fees separately.

Here's an example. Suppose you spend the equivalent of $1,010 to buy 1,000 USDT. The exchange charges 2 USDT for the withdrawal, leaving 998 USDT for the local exchange service to convert. At a rate of $0.99 per USDT, with no separate exchange fee, you'll receive $988.02. The total cost is $21.98, or about 2.18% of the $1,010 you paid. These figures are for illustration only and don't include bank fees.

Why Use a Licensed Crypto Exchange Service

When you exchange crypto, you need to know who you're sending it to and which company is responsible for paying you. In Georgia, a crypto exchange service must register with the National Bank of Georgia as a Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) before it can legally operate.

The National Bank sets requirements for the provider's management and monitors compliance with customer verification and transaction screening rules. Before you make a transfer, look up the company's legal name in the VASP register. This lets you check the status of the business handling your money, rather than relying solely on its advertising or customer reviews.

GeCrypto is operated by SMARTFINSERVICE LLC, which is registered with the National Bank of Georgia under number 0018-9404. After the exchange, you'll receive written confirmation of the transaction. Your bank may ask for it when processing an incoming transfer.
